The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Prof. Monika Grütters MdB has reappointed all five German members of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION for the next term from 2016 to 2019, after H.E. Ambassador John B. Emerson had appointed the five U.S. members in early October.

Twelve German journalists participated in the U.S. Fall Program 2016 with the first week in Washington D.C. and the third week in New York City. Individual internships in their second program week gave them a chance for practical experience at a U.S. radio or TV station.

Twelve U.S. journalists participated in the Germany Fall Program 2016 of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION. They spent their first week in Berlin, then they traveled on to Dresden, Prague and Brussels.

Michael D. Reinert, Minister Counselor for Public Affairs, U.S. Embassy Berlin, takes over as Chairman of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION, changing positions with DW Director Peter Limbourg, who will assume the Vice-Chairmanship for the next 18 month.

Erik Kirschbaum takes over as new Executive Director of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION from Rainer Hasters, who will stay with the RIAS Team as part-time consultant. Ms. Amanda Bennett, VOA Director, and Ms. Melissa Eddy, New York Times Berlin Correspondent, have been appointed as new members of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION by H.E. US Ambassador John B. Emerson.

Today marks the end of an era at RIAS and the start of a new chapter. Rainer Hasters, who has shaped the RIAS Berlin Commission and its programs like none other, is stepping down as executive director after a quarter century of tireless service. He will be leaving behind enormous shoes to fill, both figuratively and literally.
I’m looking forward to the challenges that RIAS faces in an increasingly difficult era for organizations like ours that rely on interest revenues to fund our programs and welcome ideas from all of you as well as assistance from the more than 1,441 RIAS Fellows out there. I’ve had the chance to meet many of you over the years through the enjoyable talks to many RIAS programs for Americans coming to Bonn or Berlin, the interviews together with Rainer for German candidates for the U.S. programs, and at the riveting alumni gathering recently in New Orleans. It was truly moving to hear one former RIAS Fellow after another tell Rainer how much their experiences in Germany had meant to them and several even said it their RIAS program had “changed my life.”
I’m really looking forward to keeping this wonderful German-American exchange program running smoothly and fiscally on a strong footing in these difficult times. And I’m counting on your help and ideas!

Rainer Hasters of the RIAS German/American exchange program was recognized with the Rob Downey Citation, awarded to an individual who has provided outstanding service to the board of the RTNDA. Hasters is Executive Director of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION and has been a fixture of the popular journalist exchange program for more than two decades.

70 years ago RIAS Berlin aired its first program via a 800 watt medium wave radio transmitter, using old U.S. army equipment (after having started 7 month earlier as DIAS, a wire based radio service on February 7, 1946). Thus the foundation was laid for becoming the famous “free voice of the free world”, a very popular radio station with high ratings in East-Germany as well as in West-Berlin.
The mission of RIAS was accomplished on November 9, 1989 with the Fall of the Wall and the following German Unification on October 3, 1990. RIAS Berlin was transformed into the public German radio station Deutschlandradio Kultur.
To keep the name and the tradition of RIAS Berlin (Radio in the American Sector) alive, the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION was created in 1992 to promote and deepen transatlantic friendship and understanding through exchange programs for German and U.S. broadcast journalists.

2016 Radio-,TV- and Digital Media Awards Ceremony of the RIAS BERLIN COMMISSION for excellence in transatlantic journalism under the topic “70 years after the start of the RIAS program 1946.”
June 13–25, 2016
Twelve U.S. journalists participated in the Germany summer program. They spent their first week in Berlin, where they also attended the 2016 RIAS Awards ceremony on June 17, before they traveled on to Erfurt, Cologne and Brussels during their 2nd program week.
April 5–22, 2016
Eleven German journalists participated in the U.S. Spring Program 2016 with the first week in Washington D.C. and the third week in New York City. Individual internships in their second week gave them a chance for practical experience at U.S. radio and TV stations.

70 years ago – on February 7, 1946 – RIAS (Radio in the American Sector of Berlin), initially under the name DIAS, established by the U.S. Government, started its first broadcast.
