RIAS BERLIN KOMMISSION
What an honor and thrill to spend an hour with Broadway musical actress @angieschworer right before she took the stage with the cast of “Some Like It Hot” at the Shubert Theater. It was another long but delightful day with 15 German journalism students eager to learn more about the USA— they met UN associate spokesman Farhan Haq and Helin Argav before getting a glimpse of the UN Security Council chamber and the General Assembly. They then spent two hours at lunch high in the sky at the German consulate talking to general consul David Gill and spokesperson Eva-Maria Marks. They also zipped downtown to meet the Goethe institute NY director Jörg Schumacher. @angieschworer ... Read MoreRead Less

15 German students on an ERPTransatlantic Fellowship to the USA got a great taste of the Big Apple with riveting meetings in Harlem and Rockefeller center and Williamsburg,Brooklyn. The young Germans on their first voyage to the USA quickly got into deep and meaningful discussions on religion, political views, how different media outlets cover the news and even had a candid conversation with two young women from Georgia — ardent Donald Trump supporters— they met by chance in a gift shop in Trump tower. It was a day filled with well-informed talks with 15 students who came motivated by learn and prepared. It created happy guest speakers who didn’t want to stop talking: Adam Reiss and Shirley Zilberstein at NBC News; Frieda Vizel showed the Hasidic Jewish community in Williamsburg; and German expat Hendrik Hitzel explained how he got from Stuttgart to Columbia University on academic scholarships to becoming an Emmy award winning producer for Vice. It was a packed 14-hour long day with 16 happy campers. @riaskommission @adam.reiss ... Read MoreRead Less

A whirlwind two-week @riaskommission exchange program to the United States concluded on a high note with a spirited German-American celebration at @1014nyc. More than 50 appointments in Washington DC, Pennsylvania filled the schedule Ten German journalists who finished their fellowship met with 15 German students who just arrived for the start of their three-week ERP Transatlantic Program fellowship that starts with a week together in New York. After that the students fan out across the USA in smaller groups of one to three for two week visits to the universities of Nebraska, Montana, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Indiana, Oklahoma, Arizona, Arizona State and New Mexico State to learn more about how young Americans learn how to train to become journalists. There were also a dozen New York area RIAS alumni at the gathering as well as some of our guest speakers such as @stephdujarric @helinargv @adam.reiss ... Read MoreRead Less

Same city, different world. A group of German journalists spent time on Staten Island to learn more about a conservative bastion that voted heavily for Republican President Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections. It’s just a (free) 20-minute ferry ride south of Lower Manhattan but feels like a world away. Borough President Vito Fossella, a former longtime Republican member of Congress from SI, spent an hour explaining why voters on the island felt so drawn to Trump as a different kind of leader who tried to tackle problems dear to their hearts such as crime and support for the police. He said SI has more police or retired police officers than any place in the USA— along with firefighters and sanitation workers. They all feel Trump is their guy and the Republican Party better attuned to their conservative interests. The eye-opening journey to the Republican hotspot in an otherwise overwhelming Democrat-dominated city included a lively discussion with a conservative TV personality John Tabacco, who sounded critical notes about media coverage that he argued is left-leaning. The Germans later returned to Manhattan for an interesting talk with CBS Sunday morning producer Dustin Stephens @riaskommission @majaweber1 @jnt.egr @karla_madeleine @matt_mattistrapp @laura.maria.weber @sophie.wamacher @juliecruzofficial ...
